Holding the Whole™

Translating Trauma-Informed Science into Sustainable NICU Practice

A tiered, trauma-informed pathway for NICUs ready to move from insight to action—strengthening coherence across people, practice, and purpose.

WHY THIS WORK IS NEEDED

NICUs are filled with expertise, dedication, and good intention and many teams are also navigating fragmented initiatives, competing priorities, and growing emotional fatigue.

Education alone rarely creates sustained change. And QI efforts, when disconnected from meaning and relational reality, often struggle to take root.

Holding the Whole™ was created to bridge that gap.

This work supports NICU teams in translating the science of early experience and relational health into coherent, sustainable practice without adding another initiative, checklist, or burden to already stretched systems.

WHAT THIS IS

What is Holding the Whole™?

Holding the Whole™ is an immersive, interactive offering that integrates neuroscience, Trauma-Informed Developmental Care (TIDC), and team-based reflection to support practical, measurable, human-centered improvement in the NICU. Rather than asking teams to do more, this pathway supports teams in doing what already matters with greater clarity, alignment, and shared purpose.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

This work is different by design

  • Integrates science, soul, and skill without separating “clinical” from “human”

  • Strengthens existing quality, safety, and experience initiatives (it does not compete with them)

  • Moves beyond inspiration into activation, ownership, and sustainability

  • Builds internal capacity rather than long-term dependence on outside experts

  • Supports staff well-being without turning it into an add-on program

  • Creates shared language that reduces fragmentation and improves follow-through

SEEDING SUSTAINABILITY FROM WITHIN

Why TIP 2.0 Is Included

Every Holding the Whole™ engagement includes two full enrollments in the Trauma-Informed Professional (TIP) 2.0 Certificate Program for designated unit champions.

This is intentional.

Rather than relying on external expertise, this approach:

  • Builds internal stewardship

  • Supports continuity despite turnover

  • Deepens trauma-informed leadership capacity

  • Reduces the need for future external consulting

Champions are identified in partnership with unit leadership to ensure alignment, accountability, and impact.

WHAT THIS LOOKS LIKE IN PRACTICE

  • A NICU early in its trauma-informed journey builds shared language and trust

  • A unit facing QI fatigue regains coherence and focus

  • A leadership team aligns meaning, measurement, and morale

  • Clinicians reconnect with purpose—without emotional overload

This work is contained, facilitated, and oriented toward clarity, not catharsis.

Holding the Whole™

Sustainable change in the NICU does not come from adding more initiatives.
It comes from clarity, coherence, and shared purpose across people, practice, and leadership.

Holding the Whole™ is an invitation to slow down just enough to move forward with intention, aligning trauma-informed science with the realities of care delivery.
