The Future We Are Weaving — A Vision for What Comes Next

June 17, 20253 min read

“The future isn’t a place we find—it’s a tapestry we weave. Let’s make it strong, soulful, and rooted in care.” — Mary Coughlin

What if the future isn’t something we wait for?
What if it’s something we weave?

Thread by thread.
Choice by choice.
Moment by moment.

That’s the radical promise of awakening.
Not just waking up to what’s broken, but rising into what’s possible.

Because we know the truth now:

  • That democracy and trauma are linked through relationship, voice, and care.

  • That the systems we live in mirror the wounds we’ve refused to name.

  • That healing isn’t passive—it’s participatory.
And that nothing—nothing—will change without us.

The Great Weaving Has Begun

The NICU taught me that healing is both science and soul.
That the smallest lives call us into our greatest humanity.
That survival is not enough—we must choose to nurture life into thriving.

And so it is with this country.
This democracy.
This planet.

We are living through a time of fracture—but also a time of formation.
A moment not to return to what was, but to co-create what can be.

A world where:

  • Belonging is a birthright, not a privilege

  • Leadership is relational, not hierarchical

  • Systems serve humanity, not the other way around

  • And care is recognized as the infrastructure of freedom

You Are the Weaver Now

You don’t need permission to begin.
You don’t need a title, a platform, or a perfectly mapped plan.
You just need a thread—your thread.

Maybe it’s your classroom.
Maybe it’s your unit.
Maybe it’s your voice, your vote, your vision.

Whatever it is: bring it.

The future isn’t waiting.
It’s calling.
And we are the ones we’ve been waiting for.

Reflection Prompt

What thread are you holding?
And how will you weave it into the future we all deserve?

We’ve named the wounds.
We’ve remembered what matters.
And now, we gather the threads.

The next chapter doesn’t belong to politicians or pundits.
It belongs to us.
The caregivers. The listeners. The truth-tellers. The weavers.

The world won’t be healed by systems alone.
It will be healed by those willing to live as if care is essential—because it is.

So take your thread.
Find your circle.
And keep weaving.

With care, courage, and an unwavering belief in our capacity to heal,
Weave on, my friend.
—Mary
