The Crossroads of Humanity: Choosing Our Best Selves in an Age of Division

February 18, 20254 min read

"Humanity’s greatness is not measured by power or progress, but by our willingness to heal—ourselves, each other, and the world. The choice before us is not survival or collapse, but compassion or indifference. What we choose now will define who we become." - Mary Coughlin

Humanity is at a crossroads. Everywhere we turn, we see a paradox—the breathtaking beauty of human kindness and ingenuity existing alongside deep suffering and disconnection. The best of humanity is not an abstract ideal; it is a living, breathing force, one we can choose to cultivate or neglect. In this moment, that choice feels more urgent than ever.

The Best of Humanity: A Vision of What’s Possible

Across time and cultures, certain qualities have defined what it means to be fully human in the most profound way:

  • Compassion and Love – Extending care, kindness, and understanding to those in need.

  • Integrity and Truth – Standing in authenticity, even when it is difficult.

  • Wisdom and Understanding – Seeking knowledge not for power, but for the betterment of all.

  • Creativity and Innovation – Using our imagination to build solutions that heal and inspire.

  • Resilience and Courage – Rising from hardship with a commitment to something greater.

  • Generosity and Service – Giving of ourselves to uplift others.

  • Humility and Reverence – Recognizing our interconnectedness with one another and the world.

  • Forgiveness and Reconciliation – Choosing healing over division.

  • Hope and Vision – Believing in and working toward a better future.

  • Community and Connection – Honoring our shared humanity.

This is what we aspire to. This is what we could be. But when we look around, we see a very different picture.

The Current State of Humanity: A Fractured Reality

We live in a time of profound contradictions.

  • Compassion exists, but so does cruelty. For every act of kindness, we witness indifference, neglect, or outright harm.

  • Truth is accessible, but misinformation thrives. Facts are often drowned out by fear and manipulation.

  • Innovation is transforming lives, but at a cost. Technology connects and isolates us simultaneously.

  • We long for belonging, yet we are more divided than ever. Political and ideological fractures deepen.

  • We have the knowledge to heal our world, but we hesitate to act. Climate change, social injustice, and systemic inequities remain unresolved.

And perhaps most strikingly: we know what trauma does to people, yet our systems continue to create and perpetuate harm.

Trauma, Humanity, and the Need for a Different Path

At the heart of these contradictions is trauma—individual, collective, generational. Trauma, when left unacknowledged and unhealed, fuels disconnection. It feeds fear, numbs empathy, and distorts our perception of what is possible. We see this play out in healthcare, in politics, in how we treat the most vulnerable members of our society.

But trauma is not the end of the story.

As a clinician, educator, and advocate for trauma-informed developmental care, I have seen firsthand the transformative power of healing environments—in the NICU, in healthcare, in leadership, and in human relationships. Healing is possible. But it requires intentionality, courage, and a commitment to choosing humanity over fear.

The Choice Before Us: Leaning Into Our Best Selves

We stand at a crossroads. We can let division, burnout, and fear define our era, or we can rise into the fullness of what humanity can be.

This is not an abstract conversation—it is deeply practical. Trauma-informed developmental care is a vehicle for this transformation, not just in neonatal and pediatric spaces, but across healthcare, leadership, and community structures. If we understand trauma, we can stop perpetuating it. If we choose healing, we can create it.

The best of humanity is not something we simply admire—it is something we become.

The question is: Will we rise to it?

Reflection & Action

  • What does the best of humanity look like to you?

  • How does trauma-informed care—whether in healthcare, leadership, or daily interactions—help us lean into our best selves?

  • What small but meaningful action can you take today to bring more healing into your world?

I’d love to hear your thoughts. Let’s keep this conversation going. Because the world needs all of us—fully present, fully alive, and fully human.

With hope, healing, and humanity,
Mary
